My Dear Society Sisters,
The National Executive Board (NEB) of The Society, Incorporated proudly presented the 14th National Conference assisted by the host chapter, the Potomac River Chapter.
On April 18, 2013 at the Washington Court Hotel in Washington, DC, a whirlwind of informational and enjoyable activities began and continued until departure day. A Pre-Conference activity found members welcoming and attending the chartering ceremony of the New York Renaissance Chapter followed by a lovely luncheon hosted by our newly inducted Society Sisters.
The Conference’s official opening was in the form of a celebration and recognition of 30 years service of our founding chapter, Washington, DC and the 20 years of National’s existence. Immediately following, the Potomac River Chapter hosted an elaborate reception with an outstanding program of youth performancers and local official’s recognition.
The next morning, buses transported members to the Moorland-Spingarn Research Center (MSRC) on the Howard University campus. The MSRC is one of the world’s largest and most comprehensive repositories. Preserving the legacy of the Black Experience, it collects, preserves, organizes and makes available for research a wide range of resources chronicling the Black experience throughout the African Diaspora. The Society, Incorporated’s records are maintained at this facility. Members enjoyed viewing our archival materials and the celebration held for the permanent placement of The Society, Inc. Bronze Plaque to be placed on its wall.
Leaving Howard University, members arrived at the Martin Luther King, Jr. Memorial. Photos were the order of the day. Upon arrival at the hotel, the informative Community Luncheon hosted by the host chapter was under way.
Our focus was on the Plenary Business sessions, attending outstanding workshops featuring “The Art of Appreciating and Collecting Fine Art” and “Dance: The Pleasure, Power, and the Art of Movement”.
A major highlight of the conference was the lovely Gala where three students were each awarded $5,000 scholarships representing the Performing, Visual and Literary Arts. Families of the recipients were in attendance as the Society’s guest to witness the ceremony.
We hope you will enjoy and have fun as you view the attached 14th National Conference Pictorial Review and recognize yourself and friends in attendance.
With deep appreciation and hope for a joyful Christmas and a prosperous New Year to you and yours...
Sisterly,
Lady Toni
National President
